Restoration of St Mary's

Future Repairs 2011-14
Now that the west wall of the tower and the main building stonework have been restored, we are now addressing the repointing of the remaining three sides of the tower and replacing the roof, which gets more urgent every year. The tower is fairly straightforward, if expensive, but the roof presents a much greater challenge. Not only do we need to replace all the tiles owing to frost damage especially on the north side, but we now know that most of the rafter ends rotted away many years ago and were secured by iron brackets to the wall plates. We plan to cut away the rotten parts and scarf in new oak sections and to strengthen the outer ends of the roof structure with a 'binder' beam bolted in place between each rafter and its wall plate (the timber resting on top of the wall). We have photographed each rafter so we know pretty exactly what we need to do, but until we strip everything away we will not know the true extent of the work needed. We have made a decision not to insulate the roof since the church is only used periodically for services we will eventually install some 'instant' form of heating - probably radiant - thereby eliminating the need the keep heat in the church and saving money.

We are now starting the project in earnest, see our latest newsletter.
